    Greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural phase of wine production in the Maremma rural district (Tuscany, Italy).

    In recent years, there has been an increasing interest from retailers, industries and environmental associations in estimating the life cycle of greenhouse gases emitted in the atmosphere from everyday products and services, also known as carbon footprint (CF). Life cycle assessment (LCA) is the most common methodology used to evaluate the environmental impact of a product. This approach was largely used in many industrial sectors and was also recently applied to quantify the environmental impact of the agri-food chain. Within agri-food products, wine is one of the most analysed, both for its importance in economic production and in the world distribution market. The present study is a part of the Carbon Label Project carried out in the wine production chain in the Maremma rural district (Tuscany, Italy). The project assessed the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from wine production for labelling purposes. Here, we evaluated the environmental performances of four high quality wines for carbon labelling. The international standards ISO 14040, ISO 14044, and the Product Category Rules (PCR) Wine from Fresh Grapes (except sparkling wine) and Grape Must for the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification, specifically for Climate Declaration, were used in order to carry out our analyses. The functional unit (FU) used here was one 0.75 L bottle of wine. The system boundaries were set from the vineyard planting to the distribution and waste disposal. The global warming potential (GWP) of four investigated wines was found to lie between 0.6 and 1.3 kg CO2-eq./bottle, showing a value comparable with literature. With all the four wines analysed, the agricultural phase covered, on average, 22% of the total GWP/bottle, while the main impact was in the production of the glass bottle. The results showed that the vineyard-planting phase has a significant impact on the wine CF, thus it has to be considered in the life cycle, while in literature it is frequently omitted. On the contrary, the pre-production phase did not present a relevant impact. The use of nitrogen fertilisers, the grapes’ yield and N2O emissions were the parameters that mostly affected the carbon footprint in the agricultural phase, as underlined by the sensitivity analysis

    Plasduino: an inexpensive, general purpose data acquisition framework for educational experiments

    Based on the Arduino development platform, Plasduino is an open-source data acquisition framework specifically designed for educational physics experiments. The source code, schematics and documentation are in the public domain under a GPL license and the system, streamlined for low cost and ease of use, can be replicated on the scale of a typical didactic lab with minimal effort.     Food-Specific IgG4 Antibody-Guided Exclusion Diet Improves Conditions of Patients with Chronic Pain

    Introduction Chronic pain is related to gastrointestinal (GI) functions because food components affect inflammation and pain through their action on the GI immune and/or neural system and because many analgesics interact with the gut to alter its structure and function. Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) are food-specific antibodies resulting from exposure of the gut immune system to nutrients. High IgG4 levels have been found to be associated with inflammation. Methods IgG4 were determined (both with the rapid test and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, ELISA) in men and women outpatients with chronic pain. All subjects were asked to exclude for 4 weeks all foods to which they had high blood levels of IgG4 antibodies. Pain and quality of life questionnaires were administered before (visit 1) and after (visit 2) the personalized exclusion diet period. Visual analogue scale (VAS), Italian Pain Questionnaire (QUID) and Margolis (MA) questionnaires were administered to determine pain intensity, pain features and pain extent, while Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and Profile of Mood States (POMS) were used to test the quality of life and mood state. The nutritional status was evaluated in all subjects. Subject groups were women of reproductive age (pre-MW), women in menopause for at least 1 year (MW) and men. Results Fifty-four subjects with chronic pain (n = 12 neuropathic, n = 14 diffuse pain, n = 11 headache, n = 17 low back pain) completed the two visits and the 1-month exclusion diet. At visit 1, 47 (87%) subjects showed medium/high levels of IgG4 to at least one food. The foods showing the highest IgG4 values were eggs, dairy products, cereals and dried fruit. At visit 2, IgG4 levels were decreased, increased or unchanged. In all groups, the 4-week exclusion diet resulted in a significant reduction in all pain measures and an improvement of quality of life parameters. In particular, at visit 2, the VAS score determined in the morning decreased by more than 50%. Conclusions A food elimination diet based on IgG4 antibody levels may be effective in reducing pain and improving quality of life in patients with chronic pain

    On Metastable Vacua and the Warped Deformed Conifold: Analytic Results

    Continuing the programme of constructing the backreacted solution corresponding to smeared anti-D3 branes in the warped deformed conifold, we solve analytically the equations governing the space of first-order deformations around this solution. We express the results in terms of at most three nested integrals. These are the simplest expressions for the space of SU(2) \times SU(2) \times \ZZ_2-invariant deformations, in which the putative solution for smeared anti-D3 branes must live. We also explain why one cannot claim to identify this solution without fully relating the coefficients of the infrared and ultraviolet expansions of the deformation modes. The analytic solution we find is the first step in this direction.Comment: 16 page

    The backreaction of anti-D3 branes on the Klebanov-Strassler geometry

    We present the full numerical solution for the 15-dimensional space of linearized deformations of the Klebanov-Strassler background which preserve the SU(2) X SU(2) X Z_2 symmetries. We identify within this space the solution corresponding to anti-D3 branes, (modulo the presence of a certain subleading singularity in the infrared). All the 15 integration constants of this solution are fixed in terms of the number of anti-D3 branes, and the solution differs in the UV from the supersymmetric solution into which it is supposed to decay by a mode corresponding to a rescaling of the field theory coordinates. Deciding whether two solutions that differ in the UV by a rescaling mode are dual to the same theory is involved even for supersymmetric Klebanov-Strassler solutions, and we explain in detail some of the subtleties associated to this.Comment: 41 pages, 5 figures, LaTe

    Application of Vis/Nir spectroscopy to establish peach ripening as affected by rootstock

    The objective of this paper was to monitor peach ripeness of “Chimarrita” and “Maciel” cultivars, grafted on different rootstocks, using the pulp firmness parameter, as an indicator of harvest time through equipment based on Vis/Nir spectroscopy. The orchard was installed in 2005, has a "V" conduction system with spacing of 5.0 x 1.5 m, and the cultivars are grafted on seven rootstocks: “Capdeboscq”, “Flordaguard”, “Nemaguard”, “Okinawa”, “Tsukuba”, “Umezeiro” and “Viamão”. After harvesting, the fruits were evaluated by the NIR CASE spectrophotometer, establishing categories of pulp firmness, between 40N and 60N for fruits consumed in a long term and <40N for immediate consumption. The analyzed rootstocks alter the peach ripeness of the “Chimarrita” and “Maciel” cultivars. The “Umezeiro” rootstock anticipates harvest for the “Chimarrita” cultivar. The “Nemaguard”/ “Maciel” combination provides fruits with a superior harvest period than the other ones evaluated. The Vis/Nir Spectroscopy is a useful tool to monitor the harvest of “Chimarrita” and “Maciel” cultivars

    A Stringy Mechanism for A Small Cosmological Constant

    Based on the probability distributions of products of random variables, we propose a simple stringy mechanism that prefers the meta-stable vacua with a small cosmological constant. We state some relevant properties of the probability distributions of functions of random variables. We then illustrate the mechanism within the flux compactification models in Type IIB string theory. As a result of the stringy dynamics, we argue that the generic probability distribution for the meta-stable vacua typically peaks with a divergent behavior at the zero value of the cosmological constant. However, its suppression in the single modulus model studied here is modest.Comment: 36 pages, 8 figure
